Ommi by Zikra
“A relatable journey into finding self. A powerful merging of story, song and theatre.”
Trailer of OMMI (with footage from La Mama Development, 2024).
OMMI takes the audience on a personal journey of ancestral and self exploration. Lead performer Gabriela attempts to consolidate her identity as a member of the Syriac diaspora who was born and bred in Australia. Away from her ancestral homelands and language, she decides to travel to her grandparents’ village and the place she was named after in the South-East of Turkey.
Along the way, she is confronted by the harsh contrast between the Eastern culture her family instilled in her and the Western culture she grew up in. With a disapproving traditional father, she attempts to navigate an inter-cultural relationship and forge her own path forward. Will she find her way? How will she navigate these complex challenges?
Underscored by mesmerising live Middle Eastern music by Zikra (see below), OMMI is a theatre show rich in story and interwoven by moving poetry and music.
